Students are learning how to make change. I'm focusing on subtracting the amount owed from the amount paid to make change. We will discuss couting up as well, but I will only introduce that concept. I want to make sure that students understand that to find change is to find the difference between what you owe and what you pay. Difference means subtraction.
We have made pretend orders from Scholastic, added the amounts, and then did subtract to determine the amount due. We have also ordered from a menu, paid, and subtracted to find the change.
I am also making sure that the students are aligning amounts by the value and that the decimal point is lined up. Children that have been struggling have not been lining things up well. I'm trying to catch them as I see them, so please keep an eye out for this type of mistake as well. Really, this has been a great review for adding and subtracting across zeroes too.
Language Arts
I gave the children a reading quiz last week. I'm still seeing some students that are not going back to the reading to find the answers. I have been asking students to focus on things that we focus on in class while reading - the characters, the setting, important ideas and words. These are the important things they should highlight.
We are FINALLY finished with everything fairytale related. Please visit the school on Tuesday, April 29 from 6 - 7:30 to see the work completed by the students. The writing is amazing!
I'm hoping to have some of their poetry to show you too. You will not believe how poetic these children are! I was floored. We are working on poetry during poetry month, April.
Hopefully we'll get started with the biography projects (finally) on Tuesday.
Thank you for your time and everything you do for your children!
